PREMIUM INVENTIONS

Inventions are player-created objects that can be used in any room you have ownership of. Inventions are commonly used to decorate the Dorm Room, to supplement the player-experience in published rooms, or just for fun with friends. There are many types of inventions, such as covers for your dorm (dorm skins), decorative objects, costumes, gameplay circuits, and more. Anyone with Rec Room Plus is able to sell their inventions for tokens, these are known as Premium Inventions. You can find Premium Inventions in the Invention store by using the “paid” filter. 

HOW TO CREATE A PREMIUM INVENTION

First you’ll need to create an object or series of objects that you’d like to publish. This can be anything created with the Maker Pen, such as a full body burger costume, a fully-animated character, or living room furniture set. Publishing a Premium Invention

1. Open your Maker Pen menu and choose Make Invention. 

2. Select the item(s) you want to include in the invention.

   • Alternatively, you can select the Maker Pen objects you want in an invention using the Select tool of the Maker Pen, click the Options menu, and choose Make Invention 

3. Click Next and input the invention name. 

4. You’ll be prompted to take a photo of the invention. 

5. Once that’s been confirmed, the Invention Details menu will appear. This is where you can edit the name, description, price, tags and publish/un-publish the invention. 

6. Once you press Publish, you’ll be able to set the token price. The minimum amount is 100 tokens and the maximum is 10,000 tokens.

Locating your Premium Inventions in the Store

Now that your Premium Invention is published, anyone in Rec Room can purchase it! Here’s how you can find all of your published inventions in the store.

1. Open the Watch Menu and select Store

2. Navigate to the Inventions tab

3. Click the magnifying glass and input your Rec Room username (e.g. @Coach)

   • If you’d like to view a specific invention, you can search by the name or description 

   • You can also click the filters icon in the top-right and apply the ‘myinventions’ filter

4. You can further filter by adding keywords after your username or using the +Filters menu (e.g. @Coach modern)

Tracking Premium Invention Sales on Rec.net

Go to your profile on Rec.net and click on the chart icon. This will take you to the Seller Stats page where you’ll see an Overview of your rooms and everything you have for sale. Select the Inventions tabs to view what you’ve earned from each premium invention, how many tokens are pending, and how many were sold. You can sort by Best selling (Tokens earned) or Most popular (Purchases). This can be useful in determining what sells well and what price points are successful for the types of inventions you’re selling. 

Promoting your Premium Inventions

While posting an invention to social media may be useful, there are many opportunities to promote your invention in-game.

1. Invention Tower

   • Invention Tower is an Ink Inc room that features premium inventions based on a theme. Each week the theme changes and previous themes are moved to a new floor. These floors are accessible through the elevator year-round which can make for a good source of passive income. 

   • Invention Tower also publishes a weekly video to the Rec Room Youtube channel showcasing the inventions for each theme.

   • Inventions submitted to the Invention Tower may also be displayed in the Rec Center.

2. Featured Inventions

   • Featured Inventions are displayed in the Featured tab and at the top of the Inventions tab in the Store. These rotate out weekly which makes this a great way to get game-wide exposure and boost sales on a premium invention, even if it’s for a short time.

   • Submitted inventions may also be displayed in the Rec Center.

3. Ink Inc Shopping Center

   • The Ink Inc. Shopping Center features premium inventions with seven unique shopping experiences. Shoppers can visit stores for dorm skins, furniture & decor, plushies, weapons, sci-fi inventions, toys, and Ink Inc inventions for Community Commerce.

4. Rec Room Gallery

   • Rec Room Gallery features free and premium inventions weekly. Each week the inventions are archived and available to visit any time from the main Gallery room. They often have streams on the Rec Room YouTube channel showcasing the inventions featured in the Gallery

Premium Inventions are restricted by the Use Only permissions, meaning users won’t be able to Edit, Recolor, Configure, or Manipulate the objects. This protects your work but should be considered when selling inventions.

For example, when users use Configure on a Premium Invention, they won’t be able to make something grabbable. So, if you’d like users to have a grabbable option, you’ll want to configure it before publishing the invention. Users won’t be able to Merge objects either, so keep the ink cost low when you can.

Be mindful of the Pivot point. It should be in a good spot for rotating. If the pivot point is off, users could have a difficult time rotating if their “Rotate around Pivot Point” option is enabled. An easy way to do this is to go into Edit mode, select the objects, press Options, and choose Center Pivot on Selection.

Make sure you are the only person that has worked on the invention, otherwise you may not be able to sell it for tokens.

Give a detailed description of what’s in the invention. The title should be broad for searching, but the description should list specifically what is in the invention. It’s also good to describe whether something is functioning or decorative only. Adding keywords in your description helps with search results.

Consider what is trending. Keep an eye on market sentiment and create inventions that are appealing to buyers. While Dorm Skins may always be a popular category, find out what type of dorm skins or what features buyers value and cater to that.
